| Even with over 10 million people on AOL, you'll want to communicate with friends and family who use other Internet service providers. Now you can send Instant Messages to them as well. First they must register with AOL by going to AOL's Web page (http://www.aol.com) - they need to look for an Instant Messenger link. They must choose a screen name and password for use with the Instant Messenger service and download the Instant Messenger software (or use Netscape Communicator 4.04, which comes with Instant Messenger). |

| After the AOL Instant Messenger software is installed, start the software if necessary, and then type your screen name (as registered with AOL) in the Screen Name box. (If you haven't created a shortcut for Instant Messenger, you can start it by opening the Start menu, choosing Programs, choosing AOL Instant Messenger, and choosing AOL Instant Messenger from the resulting submenu.) Then enter your password and click Sign On. |

| Your buddy list appears when your connection to AOL is complete. Use the List Setup tab to enter the screen names of your buddies; then return to the online screen to see if someone is online. To send a message to a buddy who is online, select the buddy's name and click IM. |

| The Instant Message window opens. Type your text in the window and click Send. |

| When your buddy responds, the message appears similar to the window shown here. |

| Use the lower box to type another message and click Send. Continue sending and receiving messages. If necessary, use the scrollbar to review a message. |

| When you are finished, click Menu at the bottom of your buddy list for a menu of options and choose Sign Off to close your AOL connection. |
