Component Description

15.0" color LCD

Provides a sharp picture with a backlit anti-glare screen.

Button panel

Controls the power, volume, and display settings.

Mouse

Lets you move the cursor and select items on the screen.

Keyboard

Lets you type text, control cursor movement, and perform other functions.

Item Description

Function keys

Activate various functions (depends on application).

Additional keys

Moves the insertion point within the open document.

Indicator lights

Show Num Lock, Caps Lock, and Scroll Lock status.

Numeric keypad

When Num Lock is on, functions as a 10-key numeric keypad. When Num Lock is off, performs specialized editing key functions.

Directional keys

Move the editing cursor location.

Application key

Activates shortcut menus like a mouse right-click does.

Windows key

Opens the Windows Start menu. You can also press Ctrl+Esc to open the Windows Start menu.

For resting your palm and moving the mouse

Button panel

Item Icon Description

Volume wheel

Adjusts speaker volume. Special device volume levels (for example, MIDI and WAV) are controlled by multimedia software.

Headphone jack

Lets you attach headphones to the system.

Microphone

Lets you record sounds.

Brightness controls

Changes the LCD brightness.

LCD power

Turns the LCD screen off and on.

Sleep/Standby

Turns off several computer functions to save power, but your computer can still receive faxes and perform other automated tasks.

Power

Can be set to either turn the system on and off or suspend and resume. Pressing the switch for five seconds restarts the system.

Power indicator

This LED shows the power status of the system, green for "on" and amber for "suspend" or "standby."

Disk activity indicator

This LED flashes whenever the storage media, such as a diskette, hard disk, or CD/DVD, is being accessed, .

Rear panel

Security cable lock slot

Attach an optional security cable lock (such as a Kensington lock) into this slot.

Audio Line Out port

Attach headphones or speakers to this port.

Audio Line In port

Attach an audio device to this port to allow direct audio input.

Microphone In port

Attach an external microphone here.

Mouse port

Attach the mouse to this port.

Keyboard port

Attach the keyboard to this port.

USB ports (2)

Attach any USB device to one of these ports.

Port Icon Description

PC Card slots, eject buttons

Accepts two Type I or II Cards or one Type III PC Card and accepts Zoomed Video cards.

Modem port (depends on configuration)

If your system has a modem, attach the modem cable to this port. (Also known as the Phone Line In port .)

LAN port (depends on configuration)

If your system has internal network hardware, attach an Ethernet 10/100 cable to this port to connect to a network.

Serial port

Connect a serial device, such as a pointing device, to this port.

Parallel port

Connect a parallel device, such as a printer or scanner, to this port.

Power port

Attach the AC power connector to this port.

Memory bay


Remove the cover to access the RAM sockets.

VGA Out

Attach an external monitor cable to this port.

MIDI/Game

Connect a MIDI device or game controller to this port.
