Reinstalling Windows 98

    The process of reinstalling Windows consists of starting up your system using the System Restoration CD and then running the Windows Setup program using the Windows CD. You need these items during the installation:

System Restoration CD
Windows 98 CD
Windows 98 Product Key/ID, located on the front of the Windows manual

To reinstall Windows:

    1. Start up the computer. The Gateway startup screen appears.
    2. While the Gateway startup screen is displayed, press Esc . The Boot menu opens.
    3. Insert the System Restoration CD in the CD/DVD drive.
    4. Use the arrow keys to select ATAPI CD-ROM Drive, then press Enter . The Gateway System Restoration CD Boot Menu opens.
    5. Select Boot from CD-ROM, then press Enter . The Bootable CD Main Menu opens.
    6. Select INSTALL WINDOWS 95/98, then press Enter .
    7. Press F1 to continue the installation.
    8. Select Windows 98 using the arrow keys, then press Enter .
    9. When the message asking you to remove the CD from the drive appears, remove the System Restoration CD, then press F1 . The system restarts.
    10. When the message asking you to insert the operating system CD appears, place your Windows 98 CD in the drive, then press F1 .
    11. Complete the operating system installation by following the on-screen instructions. Setup guides you through the installation process. We recommend that you make the following choices:
When the Setup Option dialog box opens, select Typical.
When the Windows Components dialog box opens, select Install the most common components.

Reinstalling Windows NT

    The process of reinstalling Windows NT consists of starting up your system using the Windows NT CD and running the Windows NT Setup program. You need these items during the installation:

Windows NT Workstation CD
Windows NT Service Pack CD

To reinstall Windows NT:

    1. Start up the computer. The Gateway startup screen appears.
    2. While the Gateway startup screen is displayed, press Esc . The Boot menu opens.
    3. Insert the Windows NT Workstation CD into the CD/DVD drive.
    4. Use the arrow keys to select ATAPI CD-ROM Drive, then press Enter . The Windows NT Workstation Setup menu opens.
    1. Continue the install process by referring to the installation section in the Windows NT Workstation Start Here manual. The manual provides information to help you through the Windows NT installation process.
    2. When prompted by the system, eject the Windows NT Workstation CD, then press Enter . The system restarts.
    3. When prompted, select NT 4.0 Operating System, then press Enter .
    4. Complete the remaining Windows NT Setup screens. Refer to the installation section in the Start Here Microsoft Windows NT Workstation manual for more information about the installation process.
    5. When the Setup Option dialog box opens, select the type of Windows load you want: Typical, Portable, Compact, or Custom. We recommend that you select Typical.
    6. When the Display Properties dialog box opens, skip the display adjustments by clicking OK.
    7. When prompted, click Restart. The system restarts and Windows NT opens.
      When the system restarts, the screen may display at 640 ×  480 pixels, leaving a black area around the screen perimeter. This corrects itself after the proper display driver is reinstalled.
